📘 "Not a River" by Selva Almada, translated from Spanish into English by Annie McDermott

This book is short but packs a punch, especially in atmosphere and language. I feel sticky as if from humidity after reading this. I'm still tense from being placed inbetween all of this threatening masculinity. I also feel 10x more suspicious of the person in my street who always collects garbage to illegally burn behind their home instead of visiting the recycling center that's just a five minute drive from here like the rest of us, but that's beside the point.

The language used in this book is something I've never encountered before. I reads like poetry, but is still very obviously prose. It kind of behaves like a river, which is very cool.

There's an afterword by the translator, in which she explains why this is a difficult text to translate and what steps she's taken to commit to it fully: reading related works, reading books that have inspired the author, researching local dialects, looking into subcultures. It made me very excited to read more of her translations.
