Believe it or not, today is the first time I have set foot in the Cathcart. I always thought it was a hipster restaurant, turns out it's a food court, the glass house is actually the common dining area

Spotted yesterday in the Cathcart area of Glasgow while I was photographing some decorative cast iron lamps holders on an old bridge. My first thought (and probably showing my age!), I didn't even know those Dymo label makers still existed! Definitely one for the Keep Glasgow Weird folder.

Love this cast iron ornamental lamp bracket on the bridge between Holmlea and Cathcart in Glasgow, especially the paintwork. Dating from 1901 (when the bridge was built), it was made by W. MacFarlane and Co's Saracen Foundry in the north of the city. There's a pair of them on the bridge, one on each side of the road, and just think how impressive they'd look if they were tastefully restored.

Possibly the shortest tenement wall in Glasgow with windows in it! This is on Kilmailing Road in Cathcath. The tenement itself flairs out either side of this wall to give full-sized rooms, but this unusual design was needed to fit it into the available space while still letting in as much light as possible.

Peddie's cottage stood next door, but was demolished in 1892 to make way for the tenement on the left of this photo. The smithy itself was converted into a pub and restaurant in the 1970s, making it the first licenced premises in Cathcart since the early 1920s when the local inhabitants voted to become a dry council ward and the licences for all five of its previous pubs expired.

The former Cathcart smithy on Old Castle Road in Glasgow. Established some 300 years ago, it was once home to the Peddie family whose ancestors were armourers and smiths to the Cathcart family. Robert Burns is said to have once had his horse re-shoed here, and later it was occupied by Robert Peddie who ran a dog infirmary on the upper floor as well as the blacksmiths on the ground floor.
