Love this ghost sign on Clarkston Road in Muirend. The MER refers to the nearby Merrylee Telephone Exchange, which was built in 1928. This means the sign can be dated from between that year and 1966 when All-Figure Dialling was introduced in the UK, and the MER prefix was replaced with the code 637. I've no idea which business this number once belonged to.

The abbreviation can occasionally appear in Scottish census or medical documents as Member of the Institute of Chiropodists (or Masseurs). An example, 1940s newspaper archives from Lanarkshire practicing in the Glasgow area. Puzzled if sufficient income to fund, indeed warrants a telephone... @thisismyglasgow When I was researching this, I noticed a number of people describing themselves as "masseurs and chiropodists." I'm not quite sure how those things gang thegither, but apparently they used to. So that might have been the same business, or a continuation of it.
