The pedestrian, believed to be a man in his 80s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries."
Elderly people are very over-represented in motor killings because they move slowly. If you move slowly then it doesn't matter if it's safe when you started crossing the road because the road conditions will change while you're crossing the road and you won't be able to move fast enough to adapt.
