Last day at the office before my June world tour of travel. I'm excited for the most part, but also know I'll be homesick pretty bad this time. Nearly 3 weeks on the road is a lot, no matter how amazing your destinations are.

It never ceases to amaze me how vast majority of people think nowadays building community is all about completing transactions vs. building long-term relationships.
That's how messed up the incentives behind #cmgr are at the moment, as a result of our tech fetish with traditional #SocialMedia π

"Where is the sweet spot between participant knowledge, experience and motivations, and the outcomes we (the organizers) wish to achieve?"
This postππ» by @jeffdmerrell is an excellent read confirming conversations without concrete action, within a community, may well be more harmful than useful.
Finding the balance between the two is where the magic happens ππ»π

"[...] the real shift is, to slow down in the company of other like-minded people making the same shift [β¦] to strengthen local and wider-region mutual support networks"
My good friend @guidostevens
is *literally* on fire π₯ with this poignant, mind-blowing essay on the pernicious harms inflicted by #Algorithms and #GenAI in building, nurturing and sustaining out personal / business relationships.
Highly recommended read!ππ»π

This looks like a really cool feature, & I can already think of some great use cases for it on #Fosstodon. We could do a Team collection, we could create collections of the fantastic #opensource projects that choose to make their home on the server, we could create collections of contributors or maintainers, & so much more. #mastoadmin #cmgr
Three elements of Community Listening:
- How a group facilitates listening to the community members it serves
- How a group helps community members make sense of what it is learning
- How a group facilitates co-creating solutions with the community members it serves
For anyone interested in building, nurturing & sustaining communities, this blog post ππ» https://jeffdmerrell.ghost.io/2026-community-listening-and-environmental-equity-in-evanston/ by @jeffdmerrell is a #MustRead
It's a long, meaty read but *totally* worth it!

Note: This is a long post - much longer than I usually write. But it lays out the full current state of the work I am doing, and how I think about community listening, co-creating local solutions, and learning what those activities mean for environmental equity in my home city.

Gosh, just re-read @tante blog post below and it's plain brutal! π€―ππ»
"Work is not really about finding friends. It happens but itβs not necessary. But there is β ideally β a level of respect for one another. The acknowledgement of each otherβs expertise, skills and contributions as well as oneβs weaknesses. All those allow the forming of communities based on solidarity" π¨π»βπ³π
May 21 will mark 25 consecutive years that I've managed the same online community. Can I make it to 50?
We're working on some plans to celebrate the occasion. It's interesting to get into generational online community. Not just because your community attracts people of different ages but because different people were born after it launched, and they are now participating in the community.
Following up from a previous toot RE: hashtags' RSS newsfeeds, here's an initial list I have set up in order to help me build, nurture and sustain my own following over time based on these topics of interest:
- #RemoteWork
- #DistanceWorking
- #DistributedWork
- #SovereignByDesign
- #cmgr
If there are any other folks interested in such themes, please do get in touch. I would love to connect! π ππ»
