Whilst the local "Iridium Service Provider" & "Authorized Iridium Reseller" didn't have any charger, #Iridium themselves directed me to one who still has these parts - abeit at moonrock prices...

  • Still gotta give them credit for supporting hardware that was out before their 1st bankrupcy and also still made by #Motorola so yeah.

I've chosen the "janky route" of a 3rd party aftermarket battery and external charging cradle to see if I can get it up and running that way...

  • I'll update you guys, but if anyone has the #pinout for that bottom connector or the "Cellular Casette" (Cuz yes, instead of adding an #encryption module like on their #PTT radios, they basically offered a "dual radio" option with #CDMA & Dualband - #GSM ( #2G ) network connectivity.

Tho I've been reliably informed that unlike #Thuraya, one cannot do #Roaming with Iridium anymore so that feature is nowadays useless...

  • Unless someone is able to hack-in a different SIM card if not build an entire aftermarket baseband.

But yeah, I'll leave that obscure hardware hunt to someone else...

Привет! Меня зовут Илья, и у меня есть небольшая коллекция сотовых телефонов из 90-х (да, согласен, лучше бы пил). Среди них есть модель Qualcomm QCP-820, выпущенная в 1997 году. Интересно, что в России владельцам этого телефона теоретически могли предъявить претензии за нарушение закона: пользоваться им дома было можно, а вот передвигаться по городу — уже нарушение распоряжения Госкомсвязи. 90-е — время, когда сочетались несочетаемые вещи. Обычно связь бывает либо фиксированной (всё, что на проводах), либо мобильной. Но в России появился третий вариант: на исходе прошлого столетия у нас существовала «стационарная сотовая связь», к которой относили стандарт CDMA (англ. Code Division Multiple Access — множественный доступ с кодовым разделением). Именно его поддерживал телефон Qualcomm QCP-820 (бонусом шла поддержка AMPS).

@EndemicEarthling @pteryx @pluralistic like having an #AMFM radio on your cell phone. No one can look me with a straight face and claim that a chip that can demodulate/modulate #CDMA/#TDMA etc. can't demodulate analog signals and give you a nice display to manage them. I remember this "debate" in the '90s.

Tech companies striking deals to enable basic features in foreign companies seems quite silly.

#iTunes I can understand, and maybe #VisualVoicemail as well, but there's no reason that something like putting a #CDMA or #GSM receiver in an #AppleWatch, or launching an #AppleNews news app should be landlocked to individual countries.

Cleaning out a drawer at work, found my old CDMA Windows phone. I miss this form factor with slide out keyboard and physical switches for things like camera. Also has the scroll click wheel like the blackberries had. Shocked it still worked (needed to be plugged in). Still has the pen.

I been out of the phone buying game for three years so I haven’t been paying attention, but do all #4G, #LTE, and #5G phones work with all #USA carriers? There was a distinction because some carriers used #GSM and others used #CDMA but #CDMA was deprecated with the shutdown of #3G / #GPRS.

@lupyuen ...the 1st time I heard about #lora was about 5 years ago when hired as a consultant to do an 'in-house' pilot project for one of the 'big 3' in #Detroit . Having spent over 10 years in another spread spectrum tech, #cdma , and once seeing how LoRa could actually have 'negative SNR' , I knew immediately its huge potential for #iot. Sadly, and as stated in the piece, many in the industry don't listen to us RF eng and get 'hyped' into the 'noise' - until now. Better late than never! 🔴

Advice wanted: I'm looking to buy a gently used #iPhone SE 2022 from a highly rated refurbish shop and attach it to my #VerizonWireless account. I don't want to wind up with a paperweight that doesn't support the network but most of the ads that say "Verizon Wireless unlocked" don't explicitly mention #CDMA or the other network protocols that I thought I needed. Have iPhones and the cell tech progressed to where that distinction doesn't matter anymore? What key words should I be looking for?
