This week's midweek plant highlight is one of my favorite, and IMO easiest to grow, Mexican butterworts: Pinguicula emarginata! Not a species plagued by the need for dry winter seasons or particularly susceptible it seems to rot problems (even when accidentally flooded), so it make for a much more tolerant variety to work with!

The flowers may have been butchered after this photo…but only in the service of crossing them and also putting pollen on several other things at the same time :3

First flower on Pinguicula “Dragon,” a medusina x moctezumae hybrid.
Due to some soil issues I failed with my first one, but that seems to have been fixed now and not only are there a couple buds developing, but all the leaf pullings took so there are several bunches of babies stretching to the sky.

They're back! After a long winter dormancy, my common butterworts (Pinguicula vulgaris) are waking up and pushing their first tiny rosettes through the moss. 🌱 These fascinating carnivorous plants spend the winter as compact hibernacula — almost invisible — only to re-emerge in spring with fresh sticky leaves ready to catch unsuspecting insects. Seeing those first bright green tips appear is one of my favourite moments of the year.

Ze zijn terug! Na een lange winterrust komt mijn gewone vetblad (Pinguicula vulgaris) weer tot leven en duwen hun eerste kleine rozetten door het mos. 🌱 Deze fascinerende vleesetende planten brengen de winter door als compacte hibernacula — bijna onzichtbaar — om in het voorjaar weer op te komen met verse kleverige blaadjes, klaar om nietsvermoedende insecten te vangen. Die eerste felgroene puntjes zien verschijnen is een van mijn favoriete momenten van het jaar.

Why growing out seed batches is fun: these are siblings, clones D and C of Pinguicula emarginata x gigantea “red flush.” I lost clone B sadly, though it was luckily very similar to A…but these two might be my favorites anyway and D in particular might just get a name.

New flower: Pinguicula emarginata x moctezumae, HC C!
Quite similar in appearance to A, which is the only other one to bloom so far, but with slightly larger, and slightly more veined petals. It seems to carry the tendency of either parent to not divide very easily…but drops leaves very readily if disturbed much like moctezumae so is not hard to propagate.
