Why YIMBYs are about to sue the daylights out of Bay Area cities

Housing advocates are about to deliver a message to the Bay Area: Comply with state housing law or face the consequences.

San Francisco Chronicle

Refusal of #SFBayArea municipalities to approve new #housing has opened #BuildersRemedy #legalloophole across 95% of region. In a boon for #Yimby activists, CA law allows housing projects of any height, density, or parking options to be built as long as 20% of units are low-income or 100% meet middle-income affordability guidelines.

It's here! The 2nd and 3rd #BuildersRemedy projects in Orange County. The shopping center site in Orange was part of a proposed North Tustin Street Specific Plan for which the city had SCAG funds to do the planning work, including and EIR. The NIMBYs freaked out. The city cancelled the plan & *gave the money back.* Now they can have a #BuildersRemedy instead.

Developers propose 576 homes in Orange, some at the mall, others by hospital

Residents concede their city can do little to stop two “builder’s remedy” projects that violate zoning rules because it has yet to adopt a state-approved housing plan.

Found this great website with five-unit housing designs that will fit on a single-family home lot: it's a great resource for anyone interested in taking advantage of the #BuildersRemedy zoning holidays to redevelop their property. We need more homes like this in general. https://zoningholiday.com/ #HousingCrisis #California
California cities are going on a zoning holiday!

There's a Zoning Holiday in California (you may have heard it called the Builder's Remedy). It's an opportunity when there will be a faster, easier way to get the permits you need to start building more homes on your property. The opportunity is already available in dozens of Southern California cities, and will soon be available in many Bay Area cities! Learn how to take advantage of this limited opportunity to bypass single-family only zoning and build more homes.

Nice work @Markasaurus! A 15-unit apartment that "could become the largest single residential building in Los Altos Hills." With what still seems to me like way too much parking, but a low ratio for the burbs I guess. #housing #zoningHoliday #buildersRemedy https://sfyimby.com/2023/02/yimby-exclusive-first-builders-remedy-plan-for-bay-area-revealed-in-los-altos-hills.html
