Watchful Cowbird

I watched this Brown‑headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) lounging around my backyard for about an hour. Some people don’t care for these birds because they’re “obligate brood parasites,” meaning the females lay their eggs in the nests of other species and rely on those birds to raise their young. But to me, it’s simply part of nature — one more thread in the larger circle of life. For them, as the saying goes, “it is the way.” 😉

Showdown on the Feeder

This isn’t my best photography, and the composition isn’t exactly something to brag about. But it has that X-factor—a tense moment unfolding at the bird feeder between a male, red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) and a male brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater). I don’t even recall taking the photo; I only noticed it this morning while sorting through my collection, deleting shots I thought I’d never use.
