@metagrrrl pour one out for good old Typepad, which I moved to soon after outgrowing Blogger.

End of an era: Typepad will be shutting down on September 30th.

Shared caffeine beverages of choice with all the other old skool web nerds who still hadn't finished migrating all their old sites as we roll up our sleeves and get 'er done.

Switching Blog Platforms

The transition away from Twitter has made me question other online services. While I have been a free, open source advocate, I had my stint of administering my own server(s) at work to support Moodle and Wordpress instances. The older I get, the less desire I have to spend tinkering at the command line interface (CLI) to get something done. Sure, it's nice to think back when I was backing up and upgrading thirteen Moodle instances at a time, but then...there's that time when some network guy forgot to switch out the external hard drive, and everything got nuked. Not a good memory.

Around the Corner

There's more. For example, Ghost 5 recently came out, and dropped support for MariaDB and SQLite. I read their explanation for why they did it, but still: if you're thinking about self-hosting you don't really want to see that kind of change!

So it looks like I'll be doing the static site generation thing. That's not *terrible*. But the reason I was looking for a service was that I wanted to reduce friction.

Ah well.

If you know of good options that I missed, let me know!

You also can't get rid of the "powered by Ghost" link in the footer. I don't like that. As a paying customer, give me the option to support you, but don't force me to!

So then I tried self-hosting Ghost on DigitalOcean. The one-click install didn't work; there was an error. Ghost's instructions for manual installation on Ubuntu also didn't work. I was able to work around the problems, but... The reason I started off looking for a service was to avoid putting problems on my plate.
