From Victoria Christopher Murray's Harlem Rhapsody

Step-mother's advice to Jessie Redmon Fauset, our protagonist, who, in 1919, is beginning her job as literary editor of The Crisis.

"You are neither white nor a man, and so you'll be judged harshly and unfairly, even as you perform well."

Has anything changed?

Only movie on my iPad is #BlackinAmerica. I've watched this episode like 3 times.
This feels like a modern day Emmett Till story. #TrayvonMartin #BlackInAmerica

This is what America is really like…
The author mentions…struggling w/cognitive dissonance…
I’m struggling w/revulsion & anger!

“This, too, is what it means to be #BlackInAmerica
1 Black woman has the chance to win the most powerful position in the world, while at the same time, another Black woman, even at her most vulnerable, wearing her nightclothes & headscarf, is perceived as a threat—& shot to death in her kitchen.”

‘This Is the Worst Police-Shooting Video Ever’ — The Atlantic

Ideas The officer who killed Sonya Massey didn’t see what I see. July 27, 2024 Let me tell you what I see and hear in the video of Sonya Massey’s killing: A nervous woman, head tilted down toward her phone, as if hoping someone—maybe a family member—has replied to her messages. A shaky voice wanting to hear words of reassurance. “You didn’t see anybody?” she asks the two law-enforcement officers who were sent to her house after she had called 911 to report what she thought was an intruder.

I would love to learn martial arts but there are no black instructors in my city and if I choose to go another route I am afraid I will get discriminated against by the students and the sifu

The people who most often presume to lecture me about racism are those who have absolutely no idea what it REALLY means to be a target and victim of it: White people.

To be Black in America is a daily exercise in remaining sane, patient, kind, and in repressing occasional temptations to go “Nat Turner” on ignorant, hateful people.

Ralph Yarl's shooter is sounding eerily familiar.

This is the same thing Darren Wilson said before shooting Michael Brown. "He was huge!"

Do Black ppl just appear superhumanly larger in some ⚪ people's eyes?

A white man shot a Black kid in the head when he accidentally rang the doorbell of the wrong home, and then shot him again.

The man was taken to police station to make a statement and then released. Think about it: if a white kid was gunned down like that, would the word 'released' appear anywhere in the news?

"Despite being shot twice, the teen was able to run to neighbors to seek help.

“Unfortunately, he had to run to 3 different homes before someone finally agreed to help him after he was told to lie on the ground with his hands up,”"
