I happen to be reading #BirthOfTheUnitedStates by #IsaacAsimov and he observes that in the 1780’s, the colonies made decisions to cede claims (on territories stretching out to the Mississippi) to the nascent federal government.

He hypothesized that if they *hadn’t* done so, the early United States would have just devolved similarly to European sovereignties of the Westphalian era.

The colony of South Carolina was the most radical one south of Virginia.

They’ve always been radical.

Nothing much has changed.

Yesterday’s #reactionary is the #reactionary of today.

“Although the French government was an absolute monarchy and, in theory, a foe of democracy, many French intellectuals had high democratic ideals and were what we would today call ‘leftists.’ The American Revolution was, in its time, supported by leftists everywhere.”

“Men who would not trust the Massachusetts rabble-rousers, would trust George Washington.”
