Italy is world leader in biosphere management: the MAB Youth Forum 2026 is launching.
Italy reaffirms its leading role in the participatory management of Biosphere Reserves, focusing on a governance model that sees young people not as simple beneficiaries, but as decision-making actors.
From May 18 to 22, over 150 young people between the ages of 18 and 35 from 142 countries will gather in Veneto, in the territory of the Colli Euganei and Po Delta Biosphere Reserve (also in the Emilia-Romagna area), for the third edition of the MAB Youth Forum, the international event organized by UNESCO dedicated to the new generations engaged in the protection of the planet.
MAB Youth Forum and Youth Governance
The event, presented at the Foreign Press Office, will be preceded by the launch of the "MAB Generation" network and the adoption of a National Pledge Charter. The Forum marks the crucial transition to a territory management model based on “Youth Governance,” where the new generations actively contribute to scientific research, the conservation of biodiversity, and the development of resilient local economies, in line with the global objectives of the Hangzhou Action Plan 2026-2035.
Veneto hosts the MAB Summit
Veneto was chosen to host this event organized in close collaboration with UNESCO within the "Man and the Biosphere" (MAB) program: it is the third summit held in Italy after the first edition in 2017. Indeed, our country hosts 20 of the 750 worldwide biosphere reserves, marine or terrestrial areas recognized by UNESCO that reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with the sustainable economic development of local communities.
The presentation was attended by Moreno Gasparini, President of the Po Delta Park Veneto, Enrico Vicenti of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, and Barbara Degani of the Cassa di Risparmio Padova e Rovigo Foundation.

Reflections from the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves, Hangzhou, 2025
To ensure biosphere reserves become engines of transformation, we urge: Investment frameworks linking biodiversity outcomes to climate finance and sovereign borrowing . Youth and Indigenous leadership embedded in reserve governance and research .
How do you see the Hangzhou Action Plan shaping national strategies and local implementation?

We have been watching series 1 of Striking Balance on Knowledge Network which is about Canada's Biosphere Reserves. I find them very encouraging - given how much other media focuses on the damage we are doing to our planet. It is made in cooperation with TVO and series 2 is becoming available
