All in all the lecturing about helmet is probably bad as it increases the public perception of the danger associated with cycling (something pretty safe all in all).
The chances of dying whilst riding a bike are pretty low compared to the death toll of inactivity and other life choices.
Hearing lectures on the topic of helmets, focused on a single aspect whilst ignoring all the facets on an extraordinary complex system is really disheartening
It's just for cycling/motorbike.
Break a leg riding a bike / motorbike and for sure you will get questions and a lecture about helmet
Get murdered by a driver (die from thoracic trauma ) and a journalist will write "... was not wearing a hemlet"

If you wish to know more on the topic I would suggest reading "The Miracle Pill" from Peter Walker

I wear a helmet when I ride to work every day. Whether it will on balance bring a benefit I don't know.
There are way too many factors, including
* How it impacts my propensity to take risk (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4767144/),
* How that choice impact the room left by driver (https://helmets.org/walkerstudy.htm),
* How it impact the propensity of some sociopath to outgroup me (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847823001018).
Humans adapt their risk-taking behavior on the basis of perceptions of safety; this risk-compensation phenomenon is typified by people taking increased risks when using protective equipment. Existing studies have looked at people who know they are ...
My styrofoam lid thread. I had it on the other platform and then I nuked it with all my data
A few years ago I was hit by a driver and his car (phone at the wheel, classic). Nobody asked me whether I was wearing a helmet. I was just crossing the road on a pedestrian crossing. No bike in sight.
Nobody asked me either when I had a freak domestic accident whilst getting out of a Sauna. A lot of head trauma happen in cars. Yet no helmet either.
I was long overdue for a new bike helmet, so I went to a cycling shop today. I wish shopkeeps would listen to me. I told the guy I have an enormous head and need a big helmet. I pick up the XXL helmet, but he takes it away from me and tries to put a size medium on my head. But since I’m not Cinderella, that tiny glass slipper ain’t gonna fit unless I get trepaned.
So then he goes for a large one and puts it on me. Yes, it went on, but no, it did not fit. It was pressing into my temples uncomfortably. When I told him it was too small, he didn’t believe me. Then he tried to tell me my N95 mask was what was making it too small, but that’s ridiculous. A thin elastic strap around the back of my head is not going to make a significant difference.
And finally, he put the XXL one on me, and guess what? It fit me just right. Go figure.
This is just another example of what it’s like to shop for things when I don’t have a dick. So annoying. I’m sure he would’ve believed @Knightky if he’d said he needed an XXL helmet, and we have the same sized pumpkin heads. #cycling #BicycleHelmet #helmet #Shopping #CasualMisogyny
Every so often the benefit of wearing a bicycle helmet is so great that it can't be ignored. I really should have worn one this morning...
... not for cycling, of course, but when I climbed a ladder in the garage and bashed my head.
