Recent opinion piece on awake #HippocampalReplay which takes together a lot of recent results and concludes that:

  • no, the evidence does not point towards a role of replay in immediate planning
  • instead, replay might be used to tag memories for future consolidation,
  • and it might be triggered by prediction error (e.g. difference of reward, novelty, ...)

@PhiloNeuroScie looks very interesting - thanks for sharing!!
I wonder how related it is to this recent paper from the #BendorLab: The role of experience in prioritizing hippocampal replay

The role of experience in prioritizing hippocampal replay - Nature Communications

While memory consolidation involves repeated reactivation of past memory traces, it is not fully understood how the brain prioritizes memories for long-term storage during sleep. Here the authors recorded from hippocampal place cells in rats, and find that a novel experience with a longer duration is prioritized for consolidation.

“One month left to submit abstracts for the hippocampus green meeting
http://hippocampusgreen.net/wp/
Join us for this 2-day conference focusing on hippocampal physiology, network dynamics, and the phenomenon of replay in freely behaving animal models (London, June 10-11, 2024)”

Looks pretty cool! If only I could plan my life that far in advance 😅
