I still wish we had a fully public program, but I can live with a unionized (TWU Local 100) public-private partnership. My most recent stats from Bay Wheels are solid, even with the multi-year WFH pandemic-era break.

Even though I rarely leave my corner of SF (see visited station map below), I've used bike share bikes A LOT. I started back in 2013, when the Bay Area Air Quality Management District launched the Bay Area Bike Share pilot program, and I've continued through the Motivate, Ford, Mastercard, and now Lyft Bay Wheels phases, with a brief detour through Jump.

Does Lyft’s “Bay Wheels” bike share have a website that shares if there’s an outage? There should be a handful of docks in my neighborhood, but right now it’s just this one empty one. I walked to a nearby dock that had an open bike, but when I tried to unlock it, it told me it wasn’t available. There was no blinking red light. Anybody on here an expert on Lyft bikes?

In a better world, I could walk up, tap my contactless payment method to the bike or its stand and off I go.

It’s not that hard, in the grand scheme of things. But it means less lock-in and less data can be collected about users and probably sold off to data brokers.

Micromobility offerings like bike share are great, folks who don’t have a bike (or don’t have it with them) have an easy way to get from point A to B without paying for a taxi or relying on buses (and there may not be a direct route).

Except when it’s run by a private, for-profit company who has a broken login system and you’re locked out. Looking at you BayWheels.

Coming up on a week since I’ve been able to login, and no help or meaningful response from support.

The only #baywheels available had a rusty chain and after riding with it for a little while I thought, "wait, I have a mechanical pencil, I can do something about this". It actually did improve the ride some to pencil up the chain. #sfba

Things were nice and quiet and I got to zip through the park tonight on the new style ebike in low power mode. I actually don't like those because they're super heavy and the low power mode does worse on hills than the classic bikes. It worked out here though. #baywheels #cyclecommuting
