UN panel asks Yunus govt not to ban any political party in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Feb 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) The United Nations has recommended Bangladesh against banning any political party for the sake of a multiparty democracy.

"Refrain from political party bans that would undermine a return to a genuine multiparty democracy and effectively disenfranchise a large part of the Bangladeshi electorate," a fact-finding report published by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) detailed, reported leading Bangladesh daily Prothom Alo on Wednesday.

Last October, within weeks of coming to power after the fall of the government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the interim government had banned the student wing of Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009. The ban, citing BCL's alleged involvement in murder, torture, rape, and terrorism, was seen as a precursor to banning the parent organisation.

Students Against Discrimination (SAD) coordinators on Wednesday renewed their demand to ban Hasina's party. SAD continues to run a campaign with a hashtag #BanAwamiLeague on social media.

In another development, the High Court of Bangladesh on Tuesday directed the Election Commission of Bangladesh to register Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (BMJP) as a political party, following a petition filed by its President Sukriti Kumar Mondal challenging the legality of the EC's refusal to register his organisation as a political party.

Incidents of vandalism and mob violence have spread across Bangladesh since August 2024's well-planned coup to oust Hasina.

As brutal attacks on the leaders of Awami League continue, the historic residence of the founding father of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was burnt down recently in a major act of vandalism.

The interim government, meanwhile, has been accused of promoting radicalism and lifting bans on radical Islamic parties like Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir while providing shelter to extremist outfits.

Minorities, Hindus in particular, have been at the receiving end of persisting mob violence even as the interim government has been blamed for suppressing any kind of dissent in Bangladesh in the most brutal manner.

I don’t think the modern world has witnessed a female dictator as sociopathic as Sheikh Hasina. Sure, there were heartless, powerful women like Argentina’s Isabel Perón, the Philippines’s Imelda Marcos and Romania’s Elena Ceauşescu. But the latter two were First Ladies and wielded power through their husbands and the former was a puppet of José López Rega.

Hasina is a step above them. She has all the traits of a Benito Mussolini or a Paul Kagame and she went one step further by folding in North Korea’s cult politics centred on ‘father and family’ into the mix.

Which is why, the people needed to go for a bloody uprising to bring her down. And yet, Hasina has not softened one bit. Not being able to hold on to power after using maximum force and the way the party workers and leaders have gone into hiding should be an indication of how well-liked this grand old party named Awami League is among the people. But no, she just doesn’t get it — she is bloodthirsty as ever, if not more.

And after losing the power they have cherished for so many years, there is no attempt at introspection and redress. Mindlessly and shamelessly, they are just going about attempting to regain power. So far, they attempted communal clashes, caused disarray in the army, went for random vandalism and industrial unrest, and tacitly caused an impasse in every state institution. Sat in her plush bungalow in Lutyens Delhi, she is instructing her men to set fire, literally and metaphorically, in Bangladesh. Only a consummate terrorist can advise such a thing.

But Hasina’s evil eyes and ways will not prevail in our soil — the self-sacrifice of the thousands of people in the 36 days of July will not go in vain. If needed, the people will do it again, but they won’t allow someone like Hasina to be back in power again.

Bangladeshi's will jump to defend their freedom. They may run out of bullets for the gun but our people will not run out of bodies to stand in front of the barrel — with arms stretched wide.
