I just got reminded #Pixelfed has DMs, so I tested them and they're basically only compatible with Pixelfed, but it does work on #Firefish even though it's not classified as a DM here but as a direct note instead (I can at least reply to it, because DM recipients don't have to be mentioned in the message, Firefish presents a separate list). I assume this is because Firefish DMs use ChatMessages whereas Pixelfed DMs use Notes, making them appear and function as posts rather than messages. I also assume this was done for Mastodon compatibility, which to my knowledge doesn't exactly work unless Pixelfed does extra legwork to make it compatible.

For
#Babilejo, this means DMs with Pixelfed users will be in "Mastodon compatibility mode," which is what Pixelfed does to DMs from Mastodon.
For #Babilejo's end to end encryption (when and if I ever get to it): it'll go for the highest security possible without compromising features, even if that means processing more on the client. For now, at least, that means that just like Matrix, metadata WILL leak (who sent it, where it's going, and when it was sent).

If you're looking for top-notch security for whatever reason, do some soul searching to figure out if you did something wrong and need to turn yourself in, and if you find you're in the right, then use Signal. No decentralized tech can provide that level of security.

I haven't even started on its API yet, so ummm we'll get to that when we get to that
