BBC sites share a common layout with identical styling and fonts... except for the lowercase "a".

Someone made a font variant just for Bitesize, changing its A to be more kid-friendly!

Toggle between. They're identical, except for the double-storey |a| on News, and Bitesize sporting a single-storey |ɑ|.

It's implemented with CSS font-feature-settings:

@shepgo @jerry Oh I see. I'm tentatively pleased to see major orgs investing in the power of independent Instances. Their account management so far seems respectful to the #mastodon norms and conventions so let's see how they go. #BBCRD #BBCNews

Just a quick shout out that the BBC now has its own official Mastodon instance (currently on a 6 month experiment), including accounts you can follow!

4) Another benefit to the BBC of being a private instance is that they can apply style rules across all the accounts conforming to their general standards.

5) And, of course, a huge #PrivateInstance benefit is that it automatically verifies all content is from the BBC.

Congratulations to the BBC for a well thought out and beautifully executed entry into the Fediverse. Welcome!

2) Because it is a #PrivateInstance they do not have to perform the difficult job of vetting and monitoring users. This problem is left to public instances which have the resources to do the job.

3) Another #PrivateInstance benefit is that the #LocalTimeline (https://social.bbc/public/local) and #FederatedTimeline (https://social.bbc/public) become chronological content feeds under their control.

The BBC's implementation of this groundbreaking instance should serve as a model to other organizations on how to field their own instances:

1) The first thing to notice is that it is not open to the public. If you try to create an account, they politely say that "it's a place for us to publish in the Fediverse," and encourage users to make an account on any other server and follow them.

"An update on our work on low latency streaming"
by Chris Poole at BBC Research & Development.

I didn't know BBC contribute to both the DVB DASH standard, and to the dash.js reference implementation. With commercial CDNs rolling out support, this allows much smaller segments of audio/video to be sent to clients through CDNs in near-realtime using W3C Media Source Extensions.

An update on our work on low latency streaming

Since our early demonstrations of low latency streaming four years ago, a lot has been done here in BBC R&D and in the wider industry.
