Conditions were just right this morning for the Austin mesh and the NOLA / Baton Rouge mesh to make contact.

Having to stand in a certain spot on my office block so I can get #meshcore repeats is giving me strong "my school has shitty cell coverage so I gotta sit by this statue to talk" vibes.

@wikiyu @ozeng also the #AustinMesh folks have a nice page about kite nodes. It’s written for #Meshtastic but the same thing can be done with #MeshCore. https://www.austinmesh.org/learn/kite-nodes-for-mesh-networking/
Kite Nodes | Austin Mesh

Learn how to build and fly kite-mounted relay nodes for AustinMesh. Step-by-step guide with equipment lists, setup instructions, lessons learned, and contingency planning.

This is one of the things that frustrates me about #Meshcore in my neighborhood: I'm in a shallow valley and the nearest repeaters are over the ridges. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. Y'know, like regular ham radio. And I have an antenna on the roof of my 2nd floor apartment, no less. I have to go downtown to chat. #AustinMesh

A generous member of the #AustinMesh passed out some FemtoFox nodes (Linux based with meshtasticd) to other members. https://github.com/femtofox

And as a bonus I received a Ikoka node as well! Same radio as the FemtoFox but is otherwise a minimalist low power node that includes a QWIIC connector for expansion.

It’s been an afternoon of fun exploring these new (to me) nodes. After meeting my β€œdealer” in a parking lot to pick up a baggy. 🀣

The SenseCAP T1000-E Meshtastic client device arrived today!

https://www.seeedstudio.com/SenseCAP-Card-Tracker-T1000-E-for-Meshtastic-p-5913.html

The form factor is great, and setup was simple. I brought it along to dinner this evening and it was able to discover several nodes. I need to read up a bit more about the preferred Austin Mesh config and hopefully be able to make a first message contact.

The SenseCAP T1000-E is a compact Meshtastic device designed for off-grid communication and location sharing. About the size of a credit card, it can be easily carried or attached to gear for outdoor use. Powered by Semtech’s LR1110 LoRa transceiver (863–928 MHz), Nordic’s nRF52840 processor, and the Mediatek AG3335 GNSS module, it enables reliable long-range LoRa communication and location updates within Meshtastic networks.
