So I found out this week that the Austin Amateur Radio Club is going to be hosting this year's #FieldDay at the Texas DPS Headquarters in Austin. Uh, what? If you want to be inclusive and inviting to anybody distantly interested in radio, setting up shop with the cops is NOT how you go about that. No.

Given that's only a mile from my house, I might attend, but would I really want to?

Bitch-ass #FCC with their busted #ULS and #CORES systems that keep logging me out and saying I don't have permission to access the site's tools. It's like they actually don't want me to buy a #GMRS license!

This is one of the things that frustrates me about #Meshcore in my neighborhood: I'm in a shallow valley and the nearest repeaters are over the ridges. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. Y'know, like regular ham radio. And I have an antenna on the roof of my 2nd floor apartment, no less. I have to go downtown to chat. #AustinMesh
I shortened the brass tuning stub under the rubber cap on the end, which brought the SWR down significantly to 1.2:1 on channel 19. And I actually connected the grounding pigtail to the base beneath the shock spring, which widened the SWR curve out to channel 40. Lessons learned!

It was long overdue, but I finally (re)tuned my CB antenna. I tuned it previously for an edge mount and assumed it would be fine for a mag mount. Obviously, I was way wrong. >5:1 SWR across the entire band. No wonder the radio would cut out once I started talking! So much better now.

Tune your antennas!

Posting about #AustinTX #Meshtastic everywhere except the local #Discord group, because I don't want to join yet another #app.

Happy and successful ARRL Field Day to those who participate! I'm planning to join the Austin Amateur Radio Club for a few hours this afternoon to catch up and make a few Q's. It's been a while.

Question for US #hams: the yearly renewal price for our PO Boxes -- the ones we use to anonymize our home addresses on the public #FCC #ULS databases -- keeps going up. I just renewed mine for $182/yr (central #Texas). At what point is it no longer worth keeping a PO Box and publishing our home addresses on our FCC registrations? I value the safety of speaking truth to power without risking a bad actor showing up at my front door, but safety is expensive.

Why call them "youngsters on the air" when "hamster" is, like, right there?
Let's just pretend we did not see the furry avatars on the front of QST magazine.
