The Gold Coast Suns set a club-record winning margin of eighty-seven points as they dismantled a despondent West Coast Eagles at the Eagles' home ground. The Suns' victory was built up the ruck dominance of Jarrod Witts, whose taps provided silver service to his swarming midfielders as the slipped past the disorganized Eagles. Former number one draft pick, Matt Rowell, used physical strength and pace to break open packs and initiate attacks for the Suns. He was supported by young captain Noah Anderson and former captain Touk Miller in establishing midfield dominance that had the Eagles playing catch-up all match. West Coast under new coach Andrew McQualter attempted to play a game utilizing quick ball movement and run to unsettle their opponents. The problem was they couldn't get hold of the ball. When they did gain possession they lacked skill in execution, which left their running players hopelessly out of position when the ball was inevitably turned over. The Suns' midfielders were thus gifted both time and space by the muddled Eagles who ended up neither attacking or defending. The lack of defensive run by the Eagles in the middle, left their defenders Andrew McGovern, Tom Cole, Brady Hough and Reuben Ginbey under pressure all day.
The nice thing about being willing to watch *any* sport is when the AFL Grand Final comes along over 9,000 miles from you, you don't question why over 100,000 people are in attendance or what's going on, you just sit your butt down and enjoy what ends up being an amazing game the same as you would for a sport you're more used to.
#AussieRulesFootball has a strict concussion protocol but it's a rough sport and there's no way that players aren't getting hurt. I love a well played #speccy as much as the next #AussieRules fan but it might be time for the game - and all pro sports - to look at ways to tone down risky play.
My 2023 New Years' Resolution is to get at least one person I know to become a fan of #AussieRules #Football.
It is truly one of the best sports.
