Today, we told the UK high court we would allow Julian #Assange to have 1st amendment rights while he's being tried, and not be exposed to the death penalty. However, this isn't exactly the case. We have a not-so-nice tendency of amending indictments whenever we want, without much attention to anyone else. If #Assange is extradited here, and we just decide to charge him with treason, that would expose him to a possible death sentence. Also, foreign nationals usually never get 1st amendment rights while being tried. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it usually never does. https://thedissenter.org/us-government-rejects-australias-call-to-end-assange-case/ I'm linking to this, because this person does really good #AssangeCase coverage.
US Rejects Australia's Call To End Assange Case

Rather than drop the charges or seek a plea deal, the U.S. government will keep fighting to put the WikiLeaks founder on trial.

Assange, complotto in pausa

I missed one of Julian #Assange's hearings this morning. He was granted partial permission to appeal on three grounds. The high court wants to know that he will be granted his 1st amendment rights during the extradition and trial process. In other words, they would like him to be able to offer a public interest defence. the espionage act does not do such a thing here, even though several legislators from both parties have offered amendments to it. I'm about to link to a well-known source within the community that provides good coverage on the Assange case. Most of the sources that do so may not align with my views on other things. https://consortiumnews.com/2024/03/26/assanges-fate-awaits-us-assurances/ Why they picked April 16th for the US to submit the assurances is an odd coincidence. It happenes to be the 10th anniversary of the Lavabit case. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavabit #AssangeCase
Assange's Fate Awaits US 'Assurances'

The High Court on Tuesday rejected six Assange grounds for a new appeal, agreeing he had only three legitimate arguments but that the U.S. could nullify them with new "assurances," reports Joe Lauria. Developing story; come back for updates. By Joe Lauria in London Special to Consortium
