The Fort Reno dispute, however, has been thick for decades. The disagreement centers on roughly 6,700 acres of land west of Oklahoma City that was once part of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation. It later formed a U.S. Army post and is now largely administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the Oklahoma and Central Plains Agricultural Research Center. Tribal leaders argue they were never compensated for the loss of the land and that it should have reverted to them when the Army stopped using it in 1948.<<

Farm bill draft would permanently block return of Fort Reno to Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes

The Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes object to language in the Congress' 2026 farm bill that would keep Fort Reno in USDA possession indefinitely.

Today in Labor History November 29, 1864: Colonel John Chivington led a 675-man force in the Sand Creek Massacre of at least 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho noncombatants. They attacked and destroyed a village in southeastern Colorado Territory, killing and mutilating up to 600 Native Americans, two-thirds of whom were women and children. The massacre has been depicted in numerous books, including “Centennial” (1974) by James Michener; “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” (1971) by Dee Brown; “Flight” (2007) by Sherman Alexie; and “Choke Creek” (2009) by Lauren Small.

The #Arapaho (/əˈræpəhoʊ/ ə-RAP-ə-hoh; French: Arapahos, Gens de Vache) are a Native American people historically living on the plains of Colorado and Wyoming. They were close allies of the Cheyenne tribe and loosely aligned with the Lakota and Dakota.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1876 the battle of #LittleBighorn was fought, aka #CustersLastStand. A force of #Lakota, #Arapaho, and #Cheyenne killed 274 US Army soldiers & scouts in response to genocidal massacres carried out by #Custer & the Army.

I was at a work conference, and they did a land acknowledgement telling us we were on the land of Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people.

I want to do more than just acknowledge this. I'm looking for something to donate to, which is of particular interest to Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people. This could be mutual aid, or any sort of nonprofit, or whatever.

I'll donate what I can and pass the suggestion along to coworkers.

Any suggestions?

>>The nearly 10,000-acre patch of land located near El Reno in western Oklahoma has been under federal government control since the 1800s and was once used for military purposes. It is now home to a Department of Agriculture center whose research includes forage, hydraulics and livestock. But for decades, the federally recognized Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes have fought for the land to be transferred back to them.<<

These Tribes Want a Key Piece of Oklahoma Land Returned

The Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes have sought the return of the land on which Fort Reno is situated. U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas is opposed, but the tribes might have an ally in Trump’s cabinet.
