Parasite of the Day: Bothrigaster variolaris

"#SnailKites, as you might have ingenuously guessed from the name, eat #snails! #AppleSnails (Pomacea spp.), to be precise. #Trematodes in the Cyclocoelidae family use snails as their hosts for the larval stage, meaning when those snails are eaten, little baby trematodes get to grow up into a mature adult in the body of whatever ate the snail (usually birds)."

This photograph is of a #limpkin or #cryingbird, #Aramusguarauna, in the #Orlando #Wetlands #Park in Christmas, #Florida.
Limpkins range from southern Georgia, to the Florida #peninsula, though the #Caribbean islands, and into South America.
They feed mostly on #snails, #applesnails primarily, but also eat other small mollusks, insects, and seeds.

Golden Apple #Snail (#Pomacea diffusa).

Back in 2021, we discovered a feral population of these exotic #AppleSnails living in the waterways of urban #Mumbai,.

Well established in Mumbai, and quite possibly, other parts of India, owing to irresponsible aquarists releasing them in local water bodies, they do not, fortunately, compete with native aquatic #molluscs, and are therefore not a threat to our (already imperiled) aquatic #ecosystems
