➡️ This Snail Kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis) is ripping into a Florida apple snail (Pomacea paludosa). As the name suggests, this kite's diet is nearly all snail, usually the freshwater snail of the genus #Pomacea. In cases of scarcity of snails, they will eat turtles and small aquatic #snails, also #crayfish. This meal was documented yesterday on La Chua trail in the Payne's Prairie state park of Gainesville, FL, USA.
Golden Apple #Snail (#Pomacea diffusa).
Back in 2021, we discovered a feral population of these exotic #AppleSnails living in the waterways of urban #Mumbai,.
Well established in Mumbai, and quite possibly, other parts of India, owing to irresponsible aquarists releasing them in local water bodies, they do not, fortunately, compete with native aquatic #molluscs, and are therefore not a threat to our (already imperiled) aquatic #ecosystems
