Last week's pretty galaxy detected by #ASTRON's #Apertif. A triple interacting system! Left: Neutral atomic hydrogen contours on a false color image by PanSTARRS1. Right: velocity map showing the galaxy rotation. Plotting by https://github.com/kmhess/SoFiA-image-pipeline. (Posted last week on the bird app.)

This is the first(ish) in a roughly (irregularly) weekly series, #KAPOW (Kelley's Apertif Picture Of the Week; name inspired by my former officemate). Stay tuned for more!

Why Creating a Non-Alcoholic Vermouth is So Difficult | Alcohol Professor

Martini & Rossi has released two nonalcoholic vermouth substitutes labelled as “dealcoholized wine aperitif” using alcohol-removed wine.

In particular, I'm part of the #WEAVE-Apertif survey targeting 400+ HI-detected #galaxies from the #Apertif surveys with the large IFU. Sampling a range of HI morphology, star formation rate, HI & stellar mass, we will have a whole new view on how environment impacts the evolution of gas & stars in galaxies. #astronomy #astrodon
Anywho...I've been meaning to do a tweet thread about these papers for a while, but ya know...life's been busy. But, these are major achievements for the #Apertif team, and massive congratulations to all the team members and co-authors. #astrodon #astronomy #RadioAstronomy
The 3rd paper "Continuum source catalog for the first Apertif data release", led by Alexander Kutkin, accompanies the previous paper on #Apertif DR1. It contains nearly 250k sources, cross matched with #LOFAR and @[email protected]'s NVSS surveys. It also presents the detection of some long term transient sources. https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2022arXiv220805342K/abstract #astrodon #astronomy #RadioAstronomy
The 2nd paper, "First release of #Apertif survey imaging data", led by Betsey Adams, describes the data processing, sky coverage of the release, analysis and verification of data quality, etc. DR1 data is publicly available here: https://vo.astron.nl. https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2022arXiv220805348A/abstract #astrodon #astronomy #RadioAstronomy

The 1st paper, "Characterising the Apertif primary beam response", led by Helga Denes, examines how the #Apertif compound beams vary in their shape with respect to time, frequency, polarization etc. This is important to how we calculate accurate fluxes of continuum, spectral line, & polarized sources. #astrodon #astronomy #RadioAstronomy
