Today I've spent way more time than I could afford on looking up something that had the appearance of being Important Terminology™, but there were absolutely no other references to be found, none. So I began wondering if maybe it was just the author's idiosyncratic way of phrasing something very normal. Asked the client and lo and behold… 🤦 "It just means 'distance'."

Well all right then, my dude, thanks for clarifying. 🙃

Update:

Blocking All the Bots on the Internet from crawling my website appears to have worked. AI summaries no longer reference me except through third parties (Amazon, etc). My website has also fallen down to the third page of search results on Google. It only took a week or so.

The result may appear to be unfortunate; I am trying to disseminate Norwegian folktales and legends (i.e. sell books), after all. But to me the most important consideration is preventing corporate vampires from feeding on my creative juices. It looks like I am succeeding at this.

But what about spreading the word? I have a plan. Whether it will work remains to be seen.

Yes it's a Pyrrhic victory, but I just added every crawler in the whole wide world to the robots.txt file on https://NorwegianFolktales.net. #FuckAI #FuckGoogle

Christianne Undset Svarstad, i forordet til Sigrid Undsets «Prinsessene i berget det blå», som ble utgitt i 1973 etter mange år i privateie, håper på at stykket blir satt opp over hele verden.

På norsk?

Well, just how the hell am I supposed to translate this, then? "Svenska Folk-Sagor och Äfventyr" Swedish folktales and folktales? Swedish folktales and adventures? What is the difference, in Swedish, between a saga and an äventyr?

I fell at the first hurdle, it seems.

Found another very cool database for translation related to Japanese tourism/sightseeing. Looks like this has been around for a few years already - wonder why I had never heard of it before. They even offer all the data as an excel file and have conducted two annual updates so far.

『地域観光資源の多言語解説文データベース』、2022年3月に公開されているらしいけど、今まで知らなかった。便利そうだ。
(「日本語(仮訳)については、英語解説文の作成時に、内容確認を目的に英語からの直訳をしたものであり、日本人向けに作成した解説文ではありません。」とのことです。)

mm, 31553 words and 76.5%. I am slowly (perhaps too slowly?) catching up.

well, 29622 words, and 71% done. the novel's picking up steam, but I seem to still be 2 or 3 days behind... 🤔

hrm. 51% of this novel done, according to OmegaT, and it's only about 22500 words... might have to adjust my goal for this month.

Thanks to long production schedules, I'm currently translating Christmas copy. 😂

Not quite feeling the peppermint coffee and gingerbread vibe right now…

Still quite happy with this TL idea I used the other day. There was a JA sentence with two long subjects and one long verb and object, and I translated it like this

Original (paraphrased): [long noun phrase 1] and [long noun phrase 2] will [long verb phrase]

Translation: [long noun phrase 1] will [long verb phrase], as will [long noun phrase 2]

It's simple enough but it took a while before the idea came to me
