When doing an alpine garden, it is often important to have good drainage. There is a "but", however. Mine is a pile of otherwise unwanted red granite chips. The "but" is - while this does provide good drainage, we are not trying to make a desert. It is important to water frequently to stop the root balls drying out. Thrift/sea pinks are quite forgiving, as are sedums, but others can suffer if there is not enough water. I lost 4 out of 8 plants through this. Take care!
