U.S. officials say the pier built by the U.S. military to bring aid to Gaza is being removed due to weather to protect it, and the U.S. is considering not re-installing it unless aid begins flowing out into the population again. While the military has helped deliver desperately needed food through the pier, the vast majority of it is still sitting in the adjacent storage yard because of the difficulty that agencies have had moving it to areas in Gaza where it is most needed, and that storage area is almost full. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military movements.

A senior official with the U.N. health agency says the reconnected U.S.-built pier off the coast of the Gaza Strip cannot supply Palestinians with anywhere near the level of aid they need. Dr. Hanan Balkhy, head of the World Health Organization’s Eastern Mediterranean region, made the remarks after the U.S. military began delivering aid through the floating pier again, after it was removed a second time because of rough seas. She told AP that the pier has supported a little bit of aid deliveries into Gaza but not to the scale that is needed by any stretch of the imagination. WHO says since Israel launched its ground operation into Rafah, aid delivery had declined by 67%.

Two U.S. officials say the American-built aid pier off Gaza's coast will be detached and moved for a second time due to rough seas. The halt in aid operations raises further questions about the viability of the sea route for desperately needed humanitarian aid. Palestinians are facing widespread hunger because Israel's war in Gaza has largely cut off the flow of food, medicine and other supplies. The two U.S. officials said the pier will be moved late Friday and into Saturday to prevent it from breaking apart, as it did late last month in bad weather. The officials expect it will be operating again next week. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military planning.
