I've posted some thoughts on GORUCK rucks. This was originally a response to a question on Facebook, most likely, and I found the writeup as I was reviewing some old google docs. Seemed worthy of a post.

12 May 2022 - Next up, Vila Praia de Âncora

Next we were off to Vila Praia de Âncora. We actually had a few more hills this day, and then, we saw some spectacular fields of wildflowers. It seems only fitting, then, that in V.P. Âncora we also saw some stunning floral displays around the city. This hike also had a fun “water feature”, with a footbridge crossing a pretty stream. Besides the sights, this trip was an opportunity to talk with my parents as they age (and aging certainly was one of the topics). Some day I’ll need to write more on the subject, but at present, I’ll keep it private. Suffice it to say, the beautiful scenery, and great walks, were backdrop for trying to speak a little more deeply on life with each other.

9 May 2022 - A Quick Jaunt to Esposende

On Monday, we had a short hike of 8.3 km to Esposende (the previous day’s hike had been 14.4 km). It started out as a typical foggy morning, but by noon the fog had burned off and it was sunny. It was definitely a good idea to have a sweatshirt along for the walk, but by noon it would definitely be off (unless you’re my Mom, who could probably wear a winter coat most times of the year).

8 May 2022 - First Hike, to Apúlia

Sunday, the 8th, we began our first day on the Camino. But… it started with the first of many fine hotel breakfasts. Each hotel we stayed at along the way provided a breakfast–but these were never the so-called continental breakfast. There were always eggs, sausages, bacon, pastries, and of course coffee. After a leisurely start to the morning (that was every morning, frankly), we hit the Camino. We would leave our bags, with our clothing, at the hotel with a luggage tag provided by Portugal Green Walks, which included our next destination. Sometime later that morning, a driver would pick up our bags and deliver them to our next hotel, so they’d be waiting for us. My dad carried a small Osprey backpack, and I carried my trusty GORUCK GR1 26L backpack. Typical gear for the day included a water bladder, some extra water bottles, a sweatshirt, camera and binoculars, a shemagh, and some snacks (typically fresh fruit) that we would pick up at a local vendor.

7 May 2022 - Arrival in Póvoa de Varzim

I departed St. Louis, Missouri on the morning of Friday, 6 February, to fly to Porto, Portugal. My parents, meanwhile, were flying there from their home in south Florida. The travel day was relatively uneventful… I arrived in Boston mid-afternoon, had a leisurely layover, and then boarded an overnight flight to Madrid. That’s where it got a little more exciting–I only left myself a little over an hour in Madrid before my flight to Porto, not realizing that I had to go through EU customs in Madrid! It worked out… though I’m pretty sure I ran from security to the gate in my socks, and then discovered that there were plenty of other people who still had to get there as well!

7-14 May 2022 - O Caminho Português da Costa

In May 2022, I had the opportunity to spend a week in Portugal walking “O Caminho Português da Costa” (The Portuguese Coastal Way) with my parents. Later that year, I produced a photo book of the trip for them as a Christmas gift; this series is a modified recreation of that photo book. Bob, Susan, and Rob Hiking “O Caminho Português da Costa” (The Portuguese Coastal Way) The photo above of my parents was taken on the third day of our hike, as we were approaching the town of Esposende. More about Esposende to follow; it wasn’t the most exciting of towns! However, I love this photo of Mom and Dad enjoying a quick break just before entering town. My Mom has dealt with some significant health issues the last few years, so it was great to see her looking so well and enjoying this time.
