Could not get Adobe Digital Editions (curse the stranglehold of acsm on ebooks and this program being the only way to access them on PC) to run on the new laptop. It would launch and then immediately freeze.

After much searching of the internet for answers, and trying proffered solutions found therein, it turned out that ADE 4.5's own built-in cloudness thar was the problem. For some reason, it was trying to summon the ghosts of every book that has been touched by my Adobe ID. Thousands of files in the brand new install's CloudSync folder. Absolute madness.

For Linux users who want to remove DRMs from ebooks they've legally purchased, so as to read them on the ebook reader they've also legally purchased for their intended purpose: I've updated my setup to replace using #AdobeDigitalEditions through wine with the simple and marvelous libgourou library.

Conhecem a #BibliON?

Lançada em 2022, só a descobri ontem, graças a um post do @orbita

Trata-se da #BibliotecaDigital do Governo de SP que, além de #livros, traz também #períodicos, como #revistas e #jornais (inclusive estrangeiros). Estes últimos podem ser visualizados tanto na diagramação original quanto no "Text View", que é um modo de leitura mais adaptado à web.

Nos livros, há limitação de "exemplares" para empréstimo (seu número total é um tanto nebuloso, visualizamos apenas a quantidade de "cópias disponíveis"). Há sistema de reserva.

Por outro lado, nos jornais não há essa limitação e acredito que supre dois públicos: aqueles que sofrem com o #paywall e também para os que são "soterrados" pelo "hard news" e preferem algo mais "auto-contido" e organizado.

Sincroniza grifos e notas com o app BibliON, que conta com recurso de texto para fala.

OBS: Há no site um "baixar para #AdobeDigitalEditions ", mas não sei se está disponível no Brasil. Seria uma chance de usar o serviço no meu velho iPad 😕

Há Clubes de Leitura também.

I just got my first ebook with drm and I already hate it. I downloaded the book, but it's just an xml-like #acsm #adobedigitaleditions file.

I know that there are some "options" for calibre. And being on linux they are probably my only options. But the abyss of this #DRM shit is overwhelming.
Do I have an adobe ID from the book shop?
Do I have to create my own one?
If I get the epub from the acsm, will this book forever be connected to this ID?

What a bummer...

I wish more e-reader apps (ahm, #FBReader for Windows) adhered to these. #AdobeDigitalEditions--I don't know if I should be surprised or not--respects it though, but I don't find this e-reader app particularly useful for everyday use. It's annoyingly slower than FBReader, it's pretty basic, and it always insists to add the eBook in its library, no matter how many freaking times you say 'no.'

The recent #enshittification of #Amazon #Kindle (no backup and sideloading of your books) spoiled my weekend.

Trying #Kobo first [not Kodo!], since I can reinstate pre-orders for imminent masterworks from @mjohnharrison and #NickHarkaway.

#AdobeDigitalEditions and #Calibre work well together on PC. Even better, loading stuff into the Kodi iOS app is way easier than Kindle. (I read mostly on the phone.) So I can start the new issue of @InterzoneMag while waiting for Royal Mail. Thanks Amazon!
