Early Modern DiplomacyThis is a problem in many academic fields. As editors of the handbook, we have tried to live up to our responsibilitz and select our authors as diversely as possible: of different genders, from as many countries as possible, with different language skills, from all academic career stages, permanent and temporary employees and colleagues who were no longer in the academic system at the time, colleagues with and without care responsibilities. The decisive factor for us was not rank and ‘big name’, but professional expertise in the topic on which we asked them to write.

Dear #academia, as a woman in a male dominated field (compt. biology) I don't need more mentors. When I don't know what to do or want opinions, I have a list of wonderful women and men that I contact for advice. What I need is champions that will put my name forward when someone ask for an expert, a collaborator on that grant that will get funded for sure or for a conference invite. That's what privilege gives, and I have some*, but would do with a bit more. *I promise to give it forward
