I was asked by a 20 year younger friend how my internet was back then. I needed a moment but then I told her the story of an IRC channel and how we made the day for a young girl who happened to be on our IRC channel. Because this is what my internet was like back then and I wish sometimes it still was like this. Let me tell the story:

I was 25, the channel members were like 20 to 30 years old. Somehow this young girl found her way to us. She was 14 when she joined the channel. >>

I think the first time I came across The Ballad of Lucy Jordan was in the 1991 movie Thelma and Louise.

Marianne Faithfull has been on my playlist every year since. Thank you for the music and great talent.

An Icelander asked if I had Twitter. I said I have Mastodon. Their response was, “Mastodon? What the hell?” So… it sounds like we need to do more Iceland-promos on here. So here are some pretty Iceland shots I took recently
Deer deliver in the strangest of places! If you find a fawn in your yard, leave it alone, do not touch, move or feed it. They have no scent and predators cannot find them unless humans interfere. Mom leaves during the day for 2 primary reasons: to feed, and to keep her scent away. Mom will return, but not until dusk and not if humans are around. If you discover the gift of a fawn enjoy the experience, and let the Mom do what comes naturally. Please share, thank you. #wildlife

@dnsprincess I take the stance of Santa Claus being the spirit that moves people to help each other.

Many decades ago, back when milk cost less than $1/gallon, my family was destitute. Section 8 housing, food stamps, back yard farming, fishing/hunting/home canning. That was just to try to get by. You get the picture.

There was no extra for things like Christmas gifts, or even fancy holiday meals.

One Christmas eve, we were sitting around and listening to the radio, when the mailbox made a sound. Went out and checked, and there was a crisp $100 bill sitting in there.

Nobody we knew had that kind of extra funds available.

It has been many decades. I've asked all friends, family, etc, and nobody knew anything about it. Was it a neighbor? A random stranger? Who knows.

But that one act was the turning point. It gave my family a chance to begin our climb out of abject poverty.

So, yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

With long cross-fades, handheld shots, jumpcuts and expressive close-ups and time jumps, Dimitri Kirsanoff's silent film Ménilmontant is a beauty. It tells the two country sister's journey (after their mum and dada get murdered by crazy axe wielding man) to the Paris neighborhood of the title. It's a typical melodrama of moral corruption and jealousy and redemption and stuff, but the presentation is nothing but. Nadia Sibirskaïa (Kirsanoff's wife) who plays the younger sister is a sight to behold. She is a cross btwn Anna Karina and Marion Cortillard. Her expressions in close-ups are as expressive as that of Maria Falconetti's in Joan of Arc.
Ménilmontant starts and ends with jarringly, frenetically shot and edited murder scenes. It's probably the most violent silent film I've seen but also the most lyrical. Beautiful stuff. #Ménilmontant #silentfilm #dmitrikirsanoff

It’s windy, but “nice” outside. Way to warm for February.
