Just a reminder that those #linux and #opensource applications you use daily require people to keep them alive and working. In a world where everything is driven by monetization, it is important to support the people who do it purely for the love of the project.

If you can, consider supporting your favorite app or service with some cash.

@dunny0 I don't think it is terrible if some large distro like Ubuntu wants to lean into AI and there's probably a large group of users who will embrace it. I just didn't want it forced into all the other distros based on Ubuntu.

I think most Linux users who would care about this have moved away from Ubuntu already anyway. Adding AI features as Snaps means none of the downstream distros need to worry about it because they almost universally swap out Snaps for Flatpaks.

Looks like the AI on Ubuntu situation won't be as bad as it originally seemed: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/the-future-of-ai-in-ubuntu/81130/41

"all of these capabilities will be delivered as Snaps to the OS, layered on top of the existing Ubuntu stack. That means there will always be the option of removing those Snaps - which I suppose acts as a sort of kill switch for the features we’re planning on shipping."

All this stuff is planned as Snaps? 😂

Crisis averted.

The future of AI in Ubuntu

There was a possible world where “AI” was introduced thoughtfully & carefully by the big tech companies, with consideration of whether each new feature was actually useful… but sadly we don’t live in that world. Certainly not in Windows, which was undeniably ham-fisted about it. (Apple has been a little more measured in its introduction and use of AI.) But what’s exciting to me about this Ubuntu announcement is that it sounds like exactly what you describe: AI introduced thoughtfully and ca...

@lyonsinbeta I worry about all the Ubuntu-based distros (Mint, Pop, Elementary, etc.) inheriting the AI stuff downstream. It sounds like Canonical won’t let you disable the AI features, so I am curious how easy it will be to remove for everyone else.

I'm tempted, but I don't see myself preordering a Steam Controller. I rarely use the trackpads on the Steam Deck and $99 is a little too pricey for me.

For PC gaming, I am using an older Xbox One wireless controller (with a micro USB port!) and it still does everything I need.
