Unqualified enthusiast tackling weird history, mysterious folklore & spooky tales with a mix of facts, dodgy humour & an occasional mushroom picture!

Jervaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire is a cisterian abbey that was established in 1156. It was then overturned during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. Over the years it has been pillaged and excavated until it stands as it does now - a regal ancient relic that is nestled amongst the stunning and atmospheric backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales.

Definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in that neck of the woods.

I really like when old gnarled tree roots grow like this. It always make me think of fantastical places where moss hides small creatures and adventure beckons. They are magic.

The tale of Sawney Bean & his cannibal clan is interwoven into the fabric of Scottish folklore.

The tale goes that Sawney & his interbreeding clan would attack unsuspecting victims before dragging them back to Bennane Cave on Ayrshire’s coast to be devoured.

The clan eventually attacked the wrong people and were executed however the bloody tale prevails & has been passed down from generation to generation across Scotland.

Evening all - hope everyone has had a good weekend! 😎

I was lucky enough to visit the Yorkshire Dales this weekend and got the chance to see the three-tiered Aysgarth Falls, which were created over time by the River Ure carving through the natural limestone!

A beautiful and atmospheric spot it has been visited by several famous artists & writers from history including J.M.W Turner & William Wordsworth!

We have officially reached that moment in #autumn when daydreams about summer and summer rambles start seeping into my mind! All of these were taken on a great day out in the beautiful peak district - what a place! 😎☀️

Ever heard of the dancing plague of 1518?

It is a well documented incident of dancing mania that occured in Strasbourg, Alsace (France today) between July & September of 1518.

On a random summers day a lady called Frau Troffea kicked of the mania by dancing on her own for a week in the centre of town. By the end of the mania between 50-400 other people had joined her and it is said that many individuals collapsed from exhaustion and some even died!

I believe this is a Silky Pinkgill!

The Silky Pinkgill is a hygrophanous mushroom, meaning its colour gets darker or lighter dependent on how much moisture it has been exposed too!

This little chap was found in a local churchyard after an autumn storm which is why its cap is so dark and it looks delightfully gooey!

Fogous are underground stone structures that are only found in Cornwall. They are dated to be from either the Iron Age or Roman Britain.

The use of Fogous is still uncertain and still debated. Some claim that they were made for storage, some believe as a safe location in case of attack, and others argue they were used for religious and/or ceremonial purposes.

I was fortunate to visit 2 of them on a summer trip and they are as atmospheric as they are beautiful.

Pink Waxcaps! Also known as The Ballerina due to their lovely pink cap that has a tendency to split and look very similar to a ballerina’s skirt! These little beauties are on the IUCN red so its always a joy when you find one!

I hope everyone has a good Monday!

Meadow Waxcap! These little beauties are indicators of ancient grassland which is pretty cool! 😎

I hope everyone has a good Sunday!
