A simple comment even as short as “I support nationwide Covid wastewater monitoring” is helpful

If only the journalism industry had the same courage as unpaid Reddit moderators, things might really change for the better.

I totally get that everyone is tired of hearing about Covid, and glad when restrictions are lifted.

But while the vulnerable can choose to avoid pubs and shops, they can't avoid going into hospitals or GP practices.

And if you're going there because you're already ill, catching Covid is the last thing you need...

So having mask wearing as a policy in healthcare settings protects patients, staff and visitors.

Petition: Protect the NHS and All Healthcare: Require #MasksInHealthcare

We urge the Government to implement a policy requiring mask wearing in all healthcare settings including hospitals, clinics and GP practices for staff, visitors and patients. An FFP2 minimum should be mandated, to protect against infectious diseases, including COVID-19.

"The humanity of my community--our right to exist--should not be a topic of debate. I am not sure you have ever been made to witness other people debate your right to exist, but I can assure you it is a terrible feeling. I genuinely hope you never have to listen to another human being argue against your existence."

Why I Declined $10,000 to Debate Michael Knowles

[This blog will always be free to read, but it’s also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription. And yes, I do speaking engagements.] This afternoon, conservative campus group Intercollegiate Studies Institute reached out to offer me $10,000 to debate Michael Knowles at the University of Pittsburgh on the validity of trans people. His scheduled event there has drawn significant controversy in light of his recent speech at CPAC calling for openly-trans people to be eradicated from the public square.

👋 Hello #fediverse! I'm going into a meeting at 4ET to talk about our newsroom's social media options.

If you think our station and other #NPR stations should have a Mastodon server or a broader presence in the #fediverse, pls boost this post. If you have thoughts, please reply, I want to hear them!

Y’all, this is the best cold opening SNL has had in years. Blown away by James Austin Johnson’s impression of Trump. I’m astonished at how he’s captured the chaotic and oft-distracted stream of consciousness that is Trump’s rhetorical style. Uncanny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj6E2_3nraQ

RESEARCH POLL #207

A year out, when the Fediverse is everywhere among business, government, family, school and friends, will you always be comfortable with things like: 1) contacting and discussing personal matters, 2) reaching out to agencies for help, or 3) yammering about a weird interest or hobby in front of your entire social graph of followers? Or will you prolly do what many on Twitter did: use another account just for things you don't want to over-share with your main social network?

I'd want a less-public account for ONLY this.

Welcome back to a bunch of people who started accounts on Mastodon in November then slunk back to Twitter hoping things wouldn't get worse.

Take my advice and just stay here next time! Uninstall the Twitter mobile app and install either Tusky (android) or Ivory (iOS) and start following people here. You won't need to go back!

I won't lie and say the transition is *painless*... it takes like... 72 hours and some clicking to get set up and used to it?

Every day that passes without an apology from the New York Times for its atrocious 2016 campaign coverage -- and a meaningful description of how it will do better -- is evidence that the "Paper of Record" remains broken in one of its most important functions. There is a fundamental arrogance to the institution, and a relentless insistence on business as usual in political coverage.

If and when democracy falls, the New York Times will have been complicit.

It's been this way since she made her name getting inside AOL and exploited her access to Steve Case. She's sort of the Maggie Haberman of tech (whereas @mmasnick is more like the @GregSargent of tech :)
