@antoniopajarito Interesante. Tal vez si no hay otros insectos, como en interior, no es tan dañino. En cualquier caso, recomiendan mejor usar una trampa que se puede hacer con levadura, como esta:

Despite being marketed against mosquitoes, bug zappers mostly kill moths and other beneficial pollinators. Mosquitoes are not attracted to light.

That is why the box can only show a drawing of a mosquito, but it does not mention the word even once.

Tornado and Rainbow Over Kansas

Eric Nguyen captured a tornado framed by a rainbow in Kansas. The white funnel extends from a storm cloud, with sunlight highlighting nearby buildings and forming the rainbow. Hail streaks are visible around the high winds. Safety tip: seek shelter, don't outrun tornadoes.

@vpermar My dad bought one of these for dealing with mosquitoes. He was very disappointed when I told him it would only kill moths and he returned it to the store
@vpermar I got duped by this thing. Totally useless.

@vpermar I got a UV-baited zapper for indoors*because* we were plagued by moths. Never once saw a mosquito in the trap.
@vpermar Capitalism sucks so bad.

@vpermar

Thank you! Thank you!

Black Flag is not the only culprit. People buy many brands of black-light insect zappers (in the millions), fooled into thinking that they kill mosquitos.

A scientific study counted the bug carcasses from such a device. Many harmless bugs but no mosquitos. Manufacturer responded that the spark "vaporizes" mosquitos. But not other bugs. Bull!

With these and our beloved neurotoxic carcinogen sprays, no surprise that beneficial insects are vanishing.

@vpermar I remember as a kid watching in horror as our beloved fireflies flew towards them to get incinerated.

@vpermar ALL the responses to this are SO WRONG! The picture even includes the explanation! Also, the box DOES include the word Mosquito!

Look at the box closely: #Octenol IS a mosquito attractant. "1-Octen-3-ol" is the formal name for it...The lure comes inside it.

More info at Octenol's wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1-Octen-3-ol

@genecowan

@jgobble @vpermar @genecowan Uh, I own one of these. I live on 10+ acres, heavily wooded with a stream. These "mosquito zappers" are highly effective at luring and killing moths. Only a tiny percentage were not moths. We stopped using it.
Truth in advertising would label these as "moth zappers" and have a giant image of Mothra on the box, but they don't.
If you want to exterminate pollinating moths, buy one.

@pattykimura @vpermar @genecowan My coment was directed at THIS portion of the post:

"Mosquitoes are not attracted to light.

@vpermar TIL! I used to have such a thing, now I got bug screens on all windows instead

@vpermar "5. Avoid traps and other gadgets

There are lots of devices purported to catch, kill, or repel mosquitoes from your garden. Some may catch a mosquito or two but they’re not very effective in knocking out big numbers.

“Bug zappers” with bright lights will collect lots of flying insects. It’s just that mosquitoes make up a very small proportion of collections.

Electrocuting devices, again, don’t seem to attract a lot of mosquitoes.

Devices that emit high frequency sounds won’t help either."

Warm weather has arrived and that means our annual battle against mosquitoes is back on. Here are five ways to mosquito-proof your backyard that don’t rely on spraying insecticides.

@dcbikeguy @vpermar I have a couple of traps that use a UV light shining on a catalytic surface to produce CO2, and a fan to suck them into a trap. They work reasonably well, far better than the zapper thing I have inside specifically to kill moths and other food pests (it also works as a night light since the kitchen is in the middle of the house)
@moz But human eyes should avoid UV?

@tuv I expect it's mostly UVB and it's hard to see the bulb directly. I wouldn't open it up and shove the lamp in an orifice though.
