If you walk into any bar or café in Spain right now, you will encounter the sound of choir children chanting out numbers, either out of the TV, or if they lack it, a radio. The same can be said for a lot of building receptions, offices, and living rooms around the nation.
This is one of Spain’s more famous and most hypnotic Christmas traditions: the National Lottery’s Extraordinary Christmas Draw, known colloquially as El Gordo.

This is the second longest-running Lottery in the world, it was first drawn on the 18th December 1812, and has been drawn annually since then, normally on the 22nd. Since 1871 the draw has been chanted out by children from the Choir of the School of San Ildefonso in Madrid, which was an orphanage up until 1999. This is why the hypnotic chant is still happening today.
After realizing that poor women were using the flour sacks to make clothing for their children some flour mills started using flowered fabric for their sacks, 1939.
