Despite being marketed against mosquitoes, bug zappers mostly kill moths and other beneficial pollinators. Mosquitoes are not attracted to light.

That is why the box can only show a drawing of a mosquito, but it does not mention the word even once.

@vpermar "5. Avoid traps and other gadgets

There are lots of devices purported to catch, kill, or repel mosquitoes from your garden. Some may catch a mosquito or two but they’re not very effective in knocking out big numbers.

“Bug zappers” with bright lights will collect lots of flying insects. It’s just that mosquitoes make up a very small proportion of collections.

Electrocuting devices, again, don’t seem to attract a lot of mosquitoes.

Devices that emit high frequency sounds won’t help either."

@dcbikeguy @vpermar I have a couple of traps that use a UV light shining on a catalytic surface to produce CO2, and a fan to suck them into a trap. They work reasonably well, far better than the zapper thing I have inside specifically to kill moths and other food pests (it also works as a night light since the kitchen is in the middle of the house)
@moz But human eyes should avoid UV?

@tuv I expect it's mostly UVB and it's hard to see the bulb directly. I wouldn't open it up and shove the lamp in an orifice though.
