📜🕊️ On June 19, 1865, in #Galveston, #Texas, Union General Gordon Granger notified the last groups of enslaved people of their freedom.

Freed people organized the inaugural celebration in 1866. Today the #holiday is observed as a way to acknowledge past faults and move toward a more perfect union.
