Ok, maybe this is the indica talking, but... I should run for US President. And my VP and all my cabinet will also be menopausal women. Cranky, put upon, tired of people's shit, just freaking done performing niceness, menopausal women.

And our campaign slogan will be "Just get out of the damn way so we can fix it" and our logo will be an exasperated eye roll. (tagline: I can see you.)

Our campaign will basically be the New Deal, only Newer. And with Tribunals. There must be a reckoning.

Sure, there will be a messy transition as we drag the reprobates to their timeout corners, but these things happen. That's why stain blocking paint was invented.

Pulse oximetry has previously been noted to have a bias against people with higher skin melanin content. It over-measures blood oxygen for Black people and others with more melanin, because most oximeters were calibrated for people with light skin. This can lead to someone with a real blood O2 reading of 91% reading as 94%. A new study shows that has led to different levels of follow-up care, with Black patients being less likely to receive supplemental oxygen as a result of this systematic mismeasurement. I was recently caring for my mom when she had a severe infection. During the recovery phase, she had supplemental oxygen at home and I literally had a pulse oximeter hanging on my neck like a pendant, taking spot checks frequently of her oxygen. It was already scary enough and I can't imagine not being able to trust the readings of what should be a life-saving device! This is why systemic racism is so insidious and pops up in all sorts of subtle but fundamental ways, especially when science is contaminated by the racist thinking! It makes me wonder what other effects this has had? Has this contributed to the known under-diagnosis of Black patients with sleep apnea? It's scary to think about.

Pulse oximeter bias linked to gaps in care for Black patients

New research reveals that racial bias in pulse oximeters leads to significant disparities in follow-up care between Black and white patients.

@Nickiquote can confirm the gingerbread is delicious!

The man who wrote "Don't be evil" said he chose it specifically so it would be hard to remove. Paul Buchheit, the engineer who later built Gmail, suggested the phrase at a Google corporate values meeting on July 19, 2001.

Then in early 2018, internal documents leaked showing that Google had signed a Pentagon contract to build AI to analyze drone footage. By April, over 3,000 Google employees had signed a letter to Sundar Pichai demanding the contract be cancelled.

The letter specifically cited "Don't be evil" as the standard the company was failing to meet. Dozens of engineers resigned in protest.

Sometime between late April and early May, the slogan disappeared from the code of conduct's preface.

Ghana parliament passes bill criminalising gay acts

Same-sex acts are punishable by jail terms under Ghana's new bill targeting those identifying as gay, lesbian or transgender.

When I was growing up, we had operating systems that exposed a lot of the technical details about their inner workings, and websites that let us use code to customize them, like MySpace and Geocities. UX designers in tech have since optimized away most of the stuff that allowed and encouraged people to learn to use technology and now people get confused by files and browser tabs. And as the knowledge shrinks, more and more things have to be simplified away. I only ever see it as a one way road.
@heidilifeldman Have a wonderful time in Ireland. If you like seefood try seafood chowder with soda bread. There’s no welcome like an Irish welcome.

"A dad who lost his sense of taste and smell for years after catching Covid says both have been restored thanks to a specially developed chewing gum trial at the University of Nottingham in the UK."

"A 12-week study found that using super-strength flavoured chewing gums (spicy, minty, sour, and sweet) helps rebuild brain connections linked to taste and smell. Following the trial, 67% of participants reported improved smell and 83% saw improvements in taste."
