The Mastodon’s Guide to the Fediverse (starting with Mastodon step-by-step!)

A simple blog about privacy, security, open source, software engineering, and tech in general.

Stop worshipping billionaires.

Elon Musk threw away tens of billions of dollars to buy Twitter, and has spent the last year running it into the ground.

When billionaires take control of our most vital platforms for communication, it’s not a win for free speech.

It’s a win for oligarchy.

Ok friends I need you to listen closely:

Elon Musk doubling down and compounding his bad decisions is NORMAL. This is how rich assholes behave.

This is how they ALL behave.

We're going into a climate crisis. One that requires immediate action. We have unprecedentedly unchecked corporate power structures and an elite that has zero understanding.

And they will make WORSE decisions the more they are pressed.

The rich will destroy the world rather than admit they don't know what they're doing.

If this Government’s outright onslaught on British liberties - restricting our right to protest, robbing millions of workers of their right to strike & stripping back human rights doesn’t terrify you it damn well should! If you watch just one thing today please make it this!

The Government’s onslaught on British liberties, including human rights, should terrify us all

Twitter stopped paying its Google Cloud bills under Musk: Platformer

Since buying Twitter, Musk has embarked on drastic cost-cutting measures, including refusing to pay some bills.

For the last two days, Elon Musk has been publicly freaking out about "EXTREME levels of data scraping," so added "temporary emergency measures" like blocking logged-out views and adding tight rate limits on viewing tweets. But, apparently noticed first here by @sysop408, a Javascript bug in the Twitter web app is self-DDOSing their servers, sending an endless loop of requests — which seems related to their scraping panic. https://waxy.org/2023/07/twitter-bug-causes-self-ddos-possibly-causing-elon-musks-emergency-blocks-and-rate-limits-its-amateur-hour/
Twitter bug causes self-DDOS tied to Elon Musk's emergency blocks and rate limits: "It's amateur hour" - Waxy.org

An "amateur hour" Javascript bug is self-DDOSing Twitter, sending infinite requests from users related to — or possibly even causing — Elon Musk's "temporary emergency measures" to stop web scraping.

The government had to make a choice as to who would survive Covid. The choice was people or financial services. It made the wrong choice. https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/07/02/the-government-had-to-make-a-choice-as-to-who-would-survive-covid-the-choice-was-people-or-financial-services-it-made-the-wriong-choice/
The stock market is failing according to the CBI. So why don’t we just let it go?

I posted this on Twitter this morning: https://twitter.com/RichardJMurphy/status/1942861045426516103 My point is serious. The CBI is saying that the situation with regard to the UK stock exchange is getting desperate, because it is losing out to overseas markets and not attracting sufficient business. The question that needs to be asked is, why is that?...
