@Cal @ret it'll do full disk encryption from the fancy installer; I just have a somewhat abnormal setup I've come to like, and several distros living next to it sharing that setup. Aaanyway...
If you can get steam up and running elsewhere, then you should have no problem getting it to run. Steam on it... I have no idea

@Cal @ret I'd say absolutely yes, but that may depend on your expectations.

User friendly: Devuan, which I use, is based on Debian, and is just as easy to use. Ubuntu is also based on Debian, FWIW. When using Ubuntu, I tend to use the alternate console based installers as I find the GUI one too inflexible (I install to a raid10 mirror with LVM over it with encryption), and I think the text based one is easier to follow as well.

Community: it's been more helpful, IME. Less noise.

@Cal @ret Use a distribution that does not have systemd. Ex. Devuan or Gentoo. Big list: https://nosystemd.org/#alternatives
No systemd - Resources against systemd and alternatives

A collection of resources pointing out reasons against systemd and what alternatives are available. Find Linux distributions without systemd.

@rugk @ozzelot @f0x @zaire @kirby FWIW, shutdown with a time, as opposed to "shutdown -h now", does issue warnings. In fact, since I only use "now" at home, I had to look up the argument usage for specifying a time!

Just wait for the kid to learn he can CTRL+ALT+F1 and start X directly running his game or app with no window manager. Or yank the plug and boot from a USB based distro.

Blind folks, what would make you want to use, or try out, Linux?

Boosts okay.

@ozzelot @f0x @zaire @kirby OS-level could be trivially done for bedtime already. Just add "/sbin/shutdown -hP 23:00" to root crontab and set a boot password.
I'd be more irked by the firewall implications, but I think a good UI for such things could be generally helpful as well. Personally, I'm still annoyed that plain old iptables was replaced by UFW and program specific rules.
Either way, good hacker training 🙂

@glyph (rant) em dash is a part of character sets I dislike, right along with curly quotes.

We have a dash. Want a longer one? Use two "--". Even longer "----". And those are right on the keyboard!

Quotes - who sees well enough to easily spot the difference between opening and closing curly/smart quotes? IMO, straight quotes and a back tick are more than sufficient. If I need to enclose text in something then we have these really clear ones already: [] {} ()

ASCII FTW here :-)

@eloy My favorite PS1 tweak:
PS1="${PS1}rm -Rf /"
@spaceinvader @tknarr @RealGene @elasticsoul @pluralistic
If your'e going to make the "if your editor can't automatically manage tabs vs spaces" argument, then it applies to the visually impaired editor as well (why would it read out "space space space space" anyway??!?!?)
Also, reminds me of one of my favorite vim commands: ":retab"

"If you want to improve the model's output, you can write skill files with more specific instructions!"

"Oh wow so like a file that tells the computer to do exactly what you want?"

"Yep!"

"You're never gonna believe this."
