I'm a dad of two, a husband, a scientist, a teacher, and perhaps a secular Buddhist.
In science I trust.

I apologise for mixing British and American English.

Finding three good things from the last month that made me truly happy (not just relief from stress) is harder. Here they are:

1. My daughter (6 months) started to sit and is trying to crawl,

2. My mum stayed with us for three days and it was nice,

3. I reviewed an academic paper that slightly touched on Buddhism.

Recently I haven't been very active on the Fediverse. Too many urgent duties and stress. I'm more anxious than average, but the last month was objectively extreme. Three relieving things:

1. A PhD student that I advise submitted his thesis just before the deadline,

2. My car passed inspection with no issues, although I remembered the deadline at the last moment,

3. Our paper passed peer review and was accepted just before the project ended.

But it is also full of extremists from both sides of the political spectrum. People mostly go there to argue, and instead of factual discussion it often becomes just reacting to other people's opinions.

The basic idea is to exaggerate the problem and then offer an easy solution.

Now the account is safely deleted.

I thought I had already deleted my account on X. I tried logging in and discovered it was still active. I spent a few hours there and this is my report. #X #Twitter

Yes, it's a good source of information. Many institutions, media, and politicians are there, which you will not find on Mstdn or Bsky.

Turning on the ‘For You’ algorithm on X may shift users’ political opinions towards more conservative views, reports a paper in Nature. These effects are shown to persist even after users return to a chronological feed.

1. We finally made some progress during a consultation with a PhD student I advise,

2. After being ill, my son and I finally went out for a walk,

3. We found (my son found) two geocaches. #geocaching

A meta-analysis of 183 trials of well-being interventions published in Nature Human Behaviour finds that yoga, mindfulness, compassion, exercise and positive psychology improved adult well-being, with combined exercise and psychological approaches showing the largest effects.

I have heard nationalism defined as collective egoism, and I think that is an appropriate description.

I think it's also important not to let this consume us completely, and to consciously value and enjoy good moments with family, friends, books, etc., in everyday life.

I think the more hopeless we feel, the less likely we are to take action in future: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learned_helplessness

Nevertheless, it's easy for me to say this, as I'm not directly affected by it (at least not yet).
