History is full of people who just didn't

'No' by Anne Boyer

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/featured-blogger/77342/no

It’s #WeevilWednesday! This absolute unit magically appeared in the laundry room sink the other night. It’s a chichí, aka citrus root borer weevil. It’s an imported threat to citrus crops, so while very pretty it does not make a good neighbour.

But look at that snoot! And those hooks on the feetsies! And that metallic carapace!

Also, definitely sang “Gold Dust Weevil” to the tune of Hole’s cover of “Gold Dust Woman” when I saw this critter.

There’s an exhibition of field notebooks in the ⁦‪Linnean Society‬⁩ library, extolling the virtues of patient observation and careful record-keeping. I use illegible scrawl in mine. Should I be ashamed? Or should I start carrying a fountain pen and water colouring kit?

So. I've been on field manual labor crews where most of my coworkers were convicts.

I've also worked with a lot of tech companies on automating farms.

And this press conference is incredible. Rollins hasn't the foggiest clue what she's on about.

Crappy photo, great magazine. My copy of the „Good Internet“ magazine arrived today!

Thank you
@xandra for putting it all together! It‘s beautiful!

Edit: If I mention a photo, I
should add it to the post, don‘t you think? 🤦‍♀️ So here it is now.

Je n'ai pas eu le temps de faire l'identification de cette mouche. Son abdomen est impressionnant...

Good Internet

I don't wanna make fun of Indians, they're the victims of companies like “builder.ai” or the “Amazon Go” store, which all claimed to have some newfound magical box, when in reality they had off-shore teams working day and night to make whatever idiotic thing they promised possible.

Even before the ChatGPT hype I visited seminars where they talked about click-farms, where people in the global south were paid cents by the hours simply to mark on images what pixel belongs to one object and which to the other.

Whatever AI will become, I will never forget the blood it was built on. With capitalism, there's no magic, it's just exploitation, every time.

For those not up to speed with the latest AI jargon, I hope to clarify some things:

  • AI: Actually Indians
  • LLM: Low-cost Labor in Mumbai
  • AGI: A Genius Indian
  • GPT: Gujarati Professional Typist
  • API: A Person in India

Every time a company promises a revolutionary “AI” product, they just exploit cheap labor from India.

It looked like a flying saucer in a daisy but turned out to be a pair of Goldenrod Crab Spiders, doing their thing I guess.
I only noticed the small male when zooming in on the computer.

@canyakker
So good! I'm glad you could capture that. I often notice my bug pornography only after the fact, as well.
@dillyd Thank you. Always fun to discover the unexpected after downloading the photos.
Nature finds a way! 😳🙈😅 Amazing capture, though!
@canyakker "I'm king of the world!" except Kate is the Titanic
