Turns out, they mixed up the numbers and I'm only the second most hipster person around. Also, my DP is blank because why not. Bob wouldn't have thought of that!

my new productivity system is that if i think of something i'm supposed to do, i don't do anything or even make a note of it. if the thing is really important, i'll think of it again some other time, and remember that i thought of it before, and still not do anything

What a line. 'This is why I’m super skeptical of current approaches to artificial intelligence, which seem to imagine that if you just cobbled together enough thermostats, then you get a person.' (Ted Chiang)

TIL - the sugar "galactose" sounds really awesome because GALACTIC amirite? But it's actually called that because it's "ga lactose" - which just means "from milk" in Greek. Because it's one of the sugars in milk.

...which had me thinking wait so where does "galaxy" come from anyway oh no it's not just Greek for... yes, yes it is. "Galaxy" is literally just "milky way" in Greek.

@charlag @pisscotheque It is true!

"Old English scitan, from Proto-Germanic *skit- (source also of North Frisian skitj, Dutch schijten, German scheissen), from PIE root *skei- "to cut, split." The notion is of "separation" from the body (compare Latin excrementum, from excernere "to separate," Old English scearn "dung, muck," from scieran "to cut, shear;"...

(This means it is also related to the word "science"!)

no centralised social network could ever produce "the taliban deleted my account". that's a mastodon special.

"But here's the thing: being able to say, 'wherever you get your podcasts' is a radical statement. Because what it represents is the triumph of exactly the kind of technology that's supposed to be impossible: open, empowering tech that's not owned by any one company, that can't be controlled by any one company, and that allows people to have ownership over their work and their relationship with their audience."

NEW: WhatsApp will soon make it possible to chat with people who use other messaging apps. It's revealed some more details on how that will work.

— Apps will need to sign an agreement with Meta, then connect to its servers.
— Meta wants people to use the Signal Protocol, but also says other encryption protocols can be used if they can meet WhatsApp's standards
— WhatsApp has been testing with Matrix in recent months, although nothing is agreed yet. Swiss app Threema says it won't become interoperable
