Dang I love this place. Image of Boise foothills during a spring storm.
new paper out: the Western US is experiencing an unprecedented population boom. We found declining rangeland quality in fast-growing counties. This result should raise alarm bells for ecosystem integrity, even in areas outside the footprint of cities https://authors.elsevier.com/a/1gKPB_3sEQ8uu2
Just finished reading "The Mountain In The Sea," sci-fi novel by Ray Nayler. Interesting near future world and a propulsive narrative, centered around corporate control of AI. Somewhat disappointingly, the octopus intelligence described in the book jacket plays a minor role in plot. But still would recommend. #bookstadon #sci_fi #novel

A glorious fall break in Oregon's outback, including this wintry hike with husband. Struggling to find motivation to go back to work tomorrow! #gayoutdoors #deschutes
Winter in the sagebrush sea. This is a harsh landscape but I love it so much.
a blunt acknowledgement that life scientists have largely failed to prevent biospheric emergency. https://elifesciences.org/articles/83292 how can we do better?
Point of View: The biospheric emergency calls for scientists to change tactics

Lab is warm, bright, and humid due to combining plants, aquarium, and several big GPUs for processing UAS imagery. May not be good for longevity of tech, but a great space to escape winter blues!
Just read this terrific review of #deeplearning in #ecology-https://doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.13901. Clear explanation of #neuralnetworks + interesting ideas on how these methods could be applied with very little training data. #machinelearning #AI
