If you want an ebook of some public domain work, either:

1. Check standardebooks.org before Gutenberg. They clean up books from Gutenberg with sane typography and print design.

2. Consider buying a "Dover Thrift Editions" version of the ebook. Many fly-by-night ebook "publishers" are turning a quick buck on selling you a Gutenberg edition. Dover is a real publisher, even in print, and their well-formatted ebooks of public domain works are usually under $4, or even less.

Grown men, he told himself, in flat contradiction of centuries of accumulated evidence about the way grown men behave, do not behave like this.

@EUCommission ahem. May I humbly suggest doing something about CVE falling apart? Maybe ship the whole thing over to Europe? https://www.theregister.com/2025/04/16/homeland_security_funding_for_cve/
Uncle Sam kills funding for CVE program. Yes, that CVE program

@EUCommission Sure, what about the recent proposed bills in EU that are going to undermine encryption through backdoors?

@ticho @EUCommission I've seen some news about it relatively recently. And they always keep trying again with different names until it goes through... Which is why the skepticism.

Europe is creating a "Democracy Shield". EU countries are racing to rearm. The European Commission must confront 3 new realities 1. The US is turning autocratic and hostile JD Vance’s Munich speech shows that Musk’s boosting AfD and other far-right candidates across the EU has official US support Trump’s St Patrick’s Day photo op with Conor McGregor is more of the same

@EUCommission We'll get more security if you promote encryption rather than killing it with your dystopian programs like ChatControl & ProtectEU
@EUCommission awesome, but please don't forget to control illegal immigration, as Japan or Switzerland effectively do

@zgjavi Japan is a bad example of a good policy. They are an island, so it is tremendously easy for them to tightly control what goes in and out.

Nevertheless, since illegal immigration is a totally different subject, I'm confident it is not adversely affected by a new defence policy.

@EUCommission Fully agree, except we shouldn't aim to do it, we should actually *do it*. There have been enough summits now. Time for action.
@thany @EUCommission Have you considered contacting your (Dutch?) national government about it? #WTFistheCouncil

@EUCommission the solution is simple and the solution is proven. Simply apply European competition law to all investments in defence.

I’ve said it once I’m saying it again : soon all soldiers in the EU will have Swedish AK-5’s, Italian Berretta’s, Dutch anti-missle equipment, and French Rafales.

Of course, this is not going to happen because protecting the local labour market is waaaay more important than a proper defence against Russia.

@EUCommission The United States is our enemy now and we should prepare for this.
@EUCommission First massive and concentrated propaganda to support the massive armaments program, and then measuring the effect of that propaganda....

@EUCommission With the American retreat from Europe and NATO commitment, it only makes sense to do this.

We need to set up a common defense and security policy in case NATO fails + as a deterrent.

Either we need to incorporate a proper EU command structure or an EU army alongside our national armies.

I'm more pro the latter option.

We already have a mutual EU defense clause and commitment to each other + we (most?) are in NATO, obligation us to defend each other. An EU army makes sense.

@EUCommission

Another angle of security: It is time to create a "Euro-Linux" and to make its use mandatory within EU (esp. for government staff and schools). The development should be distributed among EU member states and their best IT departments (at the universities). The developers should be employed full time and Europeans.

#linuxmint could be a good starting point.
