If, like me, you are on mastodon.social, consider becoming a monthly supporter. There are over 200,000 people on this instance, with fewer than 9000 currently supporting it on Patreon. The current fundraising goal is $50,000 per month, with about $32,000 raised. If enough of us kick in a buck a month we can hit that goal easily. Go here to contribute, if you can: https://www.patreon.com/mastodon

Creating Mastodon

Patreon

if we do one thing differently with mastodon, please let it be deprioritizing the creation of content purely for engagement

at this small size now it feels more authentic, people just sharing without much overhead

This could be done from both the design of creation tools to providing tools to viewers.

example:
- let people on a server flag a post based on admin-created types (clickbait, fake, shitpost)
- let people have their own client rules for those posts - be it hide or minimize them etc

Apple should run its own ActivityPub network. It would be the most affordable “takeover” of Twitter and perhaps its best and last chance to run a viable social network (aside from iMessage).

This is the way forwards. Control your own presence on social media.

Dear @nytimes @CNN @washingtonpost

You really should just have your own Mastodon server.

You control it. But everyone can read it and you can interact with them.

No need to outsource distribution decisions.

Happy to help. @adamdavidson

Twitter

Every news outlet should stand up a Mastondon instance for their reporters & staff.

It’ll be great to see [email protected] or whatever domain they want to use.

Built in verification. Every reporter for the Washington Post on a washpo domain. Every reporter for the New York Times on an NYTimes domain. Etc, etc.

Plus the “local” feed for each instance becomes a feed of all the posts from that institution mixed together — providing extra discovery.

The best career advice I have:

Be kind. To everyone.

In 1941, Nazis asked the city of Amsterdam to make this map of Jews in the city. Each dot equalled 10 Jews.

In 2022, TX AG @KenPaxtonTX sought data from driver's licenses on #transgender Texans.

But don't worry. History never repeats itself. #LGBTQ+

Texas attorney general’s office sought state data on transgender Texans

The effort to obtain data came as Attorney General Ken Paxton, Gov. Greg Abbott and other Republican leaders have marshaled resources against transgender Texans.

The Washington Post

Yup, super looking forward to winter when we all collectively forget about germ theory, then pay for it the rest of the year before starting anew. ❄️

So this, but make it a #tripledemic. Remember as you make plans over the next few weeks, pediatric ICUs are massively over capacity around the country already. We can't do this again.
